Asian Paints WoodTech Melamyne Sealer is a two-component, solvent-based, acid-curing wood undercoat that builds a solid, level base on interior timber and veneer. It fills the grain and open pores so the Melamyne Matt (1790) or Glossy (1789) topcoat sits on top instead of sinking in, which gives a uniform, patch-free finish with better scratch resistance and depth. It comes as a kit of sealer base and hardener, and works best sprayed.

Key Features

  • Fills Pores and Blocks Topcoat Sinkage: High-solid resins level the wood so the matt or glossy coat reaches its full sheen
  • Strong Inter-Coat Adhesion: Cross-links to the timber below and the topcoat above, preventing peeling or film separation
  • Sands Easily: Cures crisp and powders off without gumming or clogging sandpaper

Recommended Applications

  • Living Room Cabinetry: TV units, coffee tables and display racks, sealed before top-coating
  • Premium Veneer Paneling: An even surface over large wall veneers and internal partitions
  • Internal Flush Doors: Scratch-resistant base protection for high-use indoor doors and frames
  • Modular Kitchen Framing: A foundation coat that seals raw cabinetry against ambient moisture

Application Guidelines

  1. Sand: Sand raw wood along the grain with No. 180 sandpaper, then No. 320 or 400. Wipe off all dust
  2. Oily Woods: On oily or high-resin hardwoods such as Rosewood, Walnut or Teak, first spray 1–2 coats of WoodTech Epoxy Insulator so the natural oils don't bleed up and slow the acid-curing
  3. Fill: Clean out loose fibres and fill dents, deep cracks and gaps with WoodTech Wood Filler and a flexible putty knife. Let it dry fully, then sand flush
  4. Stain (Optional): Apply WoodTech Wood Stains Interiors by rag or spray and allow 30 to 120 minutes to dry. Never mix stain into the clear sealer
  5. Activate: Stir the sealer base well, mix with the hardener at 90:10 by volume, and thin 20–40% with Thinner T-124 (spray) or Thinner 2126 (brush). Let it rest 30 minutes, then use it within 8 to 10 hours
  6. First Coat: Apply a uniform coat by spray or brush and let it dry for 5–6 hours (spray) or 8–10 hours (brush)
  7. Intermediate Sanding: Lightly sand the cured coat with No. 320 or 400 sandpaper to cut raised grain, and clean off the dust. Never use steel wool
  8. Second Coat and Topcoat: Apply the second coat for a flat, non-porous surface, let it cure for the same drying window, sand, then apply Melamyne Glossy (1789) or Matt (1790)

1) Can I skip this sealer and apply Melamyne Glossy or Matt directly to raw wood?

Skipping the sealer is strongly discouraged. Raw wood acts like a sponge, so a topcoat applied straight onto it soaks in unevenly and the finish looks wavy, dull, patchy and under-filled. The sealer fills the pores so the topcoat stays on top for a richer look.

2) Can I use a PU or NC sealer under a Melamyne topcoat?

No. WoodTech Melamyne is an acid-curing system, so keep the whole system uniform. Mixing in a different undercoat such as NC or PU can cause chemical incompatibility, with loss of adhesion, soft film, wrinkling or peeling.

3) What is the pot life once mixed with the hardener?

Once the base and hardener are combined at 90:10 and thinned, the mix lasts up to 8 to 10 hours. Apply it within that window. Anything left longer starts cross-linking in the pot, loses its flow and clogs equipment, so discard it.

4) Why must the mix rest for 30 minutes before application?

When the acid-catalyst hardener meets the melamine base resin, cross-linking begins. A 30-minute rest lets the components blend evenly, which helps prevent pinholes, air bubbles and uneven film levelling when sprayed.

5) Which thinner should I use?

Use Asian Paints Thinner T-124 for spray gun setups, or Thinner 2126 for brush application, at 20–40% by volume. Do not swap in a general-purpose NC thinner or mineral turpentine oil (MTO), because the mix will curdle immediately.

6) How long before I sand or apply the topcoat?

The sealer is surface dry in 20 minutes and tack-free in 2 hours, but you must wait 5 to 6 hours for spray or 8 to 10 hours for brush before sanding or topcoating. Sanding earlier traps gummy pockets under the film, which makes the topcoat blister or look hazy.
